Christine Camacho

Camacho Elementary is named Christine Camacho Elementary. Christine Alvarado Camacho was born in Harlem, N.Y., on Feb. 19, 1972. She served as a registrar at Leander ISD’s Whitestone and Pleasant Hill elementary schools from October of 2002 until January 2013, before losing her battle with colon cancer later that year.

Christine was heavily involved in the community through church groups, athletic clubs, the Cedar Park Police Department and LISD. She spent much of her free time volunteering as a coach for several youth soccer teams called The Cosmos. Known for her strength, contagious smile, bubbly personality and genuine care for students, she was deeply respected throughout the LISD community.

Christine’s children are Carissa, David and Christian. When Christine’s mother passed away, Christine took legal guardianship of her brother, Victor Cortez, when he was 11 years old and raised him. Christine’s love for her family and friends — as well as her concern for the students, teachers and parents at the campuses where she worked — was apparent to all who knew her.

The naming of this elementary school reflects Christine’s belief in helping others through love and kindness and being a friend to everyone.
